Register's high school football rankings released

It can be fun being No. 1, right?

Being one of the Des Moines Register's top-ranked football teams can be something to honor accomplishments or bring out school pride.

It can also make coaches toss and turn when they realize their team just became a target for everyone else.

Ankeny Centennial's Chance Gibbons gets sacked by Dowling Catholic's Drake Rupperecht Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, during their 4A state semifinal game at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls.

The Register's top-ranked teams for Week 1 of the season: West Des Moines Dowling Catholic in Class 4A, Norwalk in 3A, Union of La Porte City in 2A, Iowa City Regina in 1A, Lisbon in Class A and Harris-Lake Park in eight-player.

We'll update our rankings weekly during the season. So if you think we picked the wrong team, be patient and see what happens. It's just an opinion. We respect yours.

The Register's Super 10 football rankings were announced Monday.
