Ankeny voters approve $18 million for elementary school

Ankeny voters approved an $18 million bond referendum Tuesday to build a new elementary school.

The bond passed by a vote of 2,091 to 298, according to unofficial election results from the Polk County Auditor's Office. 

The district's 11th elementary school is slated to be similar in design to Prairie Trail and Rock Creek elementaries. It will be built north of the Des Moines Area Community College campus in the Prairie Trail development.

Construction is planned to begin in the fall. It will open in 2020.

It will teach students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Preschool students will attend Ankeny's centralized early education center at Terrace Elementary once it opens in 2020.

The bond will not affect property tax rates, according to the school district.
