Johnston company introduces girls to engineering

A Johnston company opened its doors to female students last week during its Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day.

The Foth Companies, 8191 Birchwood Court, hosted approximately 100 girls ages 5 to 17 to learn about engineering and science through hands-on projects that focused on virtual reality, 3D modeling, roundabouts, drones and water quality.

Some of the activities included making silly putty, building tall marshmallow structures, testing the strength of spaghetti, making paper airplanes and posing in a photo booth.

The event also featured an “Ask an Engineer” station where Molly Long, one of Foth’s transportation engineers, answered the girls’ questions about engineering, how she got started in engineering, what classes to take and more.
