A man was arrested after allegedly threatening to kill Ankeny Wal-Mart workers with a gut hook knife that he stole from the store, according to court documents.

Kelly Sears, 33, of Des Moines, was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery, two counts of first-degree harassment and two counts of trespassing on Jan. 10. He is in Polk County Jail with a $29,600 bond.

On Jan. 10, Ankeny police were called to the Wal-Mart at 1002 Southeast National Drive on a report of a shoplifter threatening employees with a knife at around 2 p.m.

Store employees told responding officers they saw Kelly Alan Sears, 33, of Des Moines, opening a Camillus gut hook knife package in the store.

When Kelly attempted to leave the store without paying for the knife, clothing and beer he drank, workers stopped him and brought him into the loss prevention office without incident. While Kelly was in the office, he told workers, "I'm going to f------ kill you all," according to court records.

The workers then let him leave, because they did not want to get hurt.

As workers followed him out of the store, he turned around and threatened to slit one employee's throat, according to court records. The employees then locked the door so he couldn't come back in. Sears then tapped the knife in a threatening manner against the glass, according to court records.

When officers arrived, Sears ran northbound. Officers found him and had him at gunpoint in a parking lot at 1001 Southeast Lorenz Drive, according to police documents.

Officers who took Sears into custody said they were unable to speak with him because of his "enraged demeanor," according to court documents.

Sears was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery, two counts of first-degree harassment and two counts of trespassing. He is in Polk County Jail with a $29,600 bond.
