The Iowa State Fair’s butter cow not only celebrates its 105th anniversary this August but gets to help the television and movie series “Star Trek” toast its 50th year.

The fifth butter sculptor for the Iowa State Fair, Sarah Pratt of West Des Moines, apprenticed with Norma “Duffy” Lyon for 15 years until she took over in 2006. Here is Pratt sculpting her 10th cow in 2015.

The state fair just announced a tribute to “Star Trek” will be the companion sculpture this year in the John Deere Agriculture Building Aug. 11-21. Butter sculptor Sarah Pratt plans to sculpt replicas of Captain Kirk, Spock, Dr. McCoy and Uhura in two scenes on the bridge, along with a model of the starship USS Enterprise. “Star Trek” fans note that Captain James T. Kirk hails from Iowa, and the town of Riverside adopted Kirk as one of their own.

The butter cow became a regular fixture at the state fair in 1911. The fair added a companion sculpture in 1996 that featured Grant Wood's “American Gothic.” Through the years, Garth Brooks, the 25th anniversary of “Field of Dreams,” Superman and gymnast Shawn Johnson had their own sculptures. Last year commemorated the 80th anniversary of the board game Monopoly.
