Police Beat: Inmate who attempted suicide dies

A Polk County inmate who attempted to commit suicide at the jail died at a hospital several days later, officials said.

The inmate, who was not identified, attempted suicide by hanging around 9:30 a.m. Aug. 23, Polk County officials said. Staff took lifesaving measures, and the inmate was taken to a hospital, officials said.

The inmate died Monday, authorities said.

No further information was immediately available.

No lobby visits at jail on Labor Day

Lobby visits will not be available at the Polk County Jail on Monday because of the Labor Day holiday, the sheriff’s office said.

No one injured in drive-by shooting

Des Moines police are investigating a drive-by shooting, officials said.

Someone fired shots around 5:30 a.m. Friday at a house converted into apartments in the 1400 block of 10th Street, officials said.

Several bullets hit the building but no one was hurt, police said. No arrests have been reported.
