Police: Hit-and-run driver 'panicked'

A 20-year-old woman who allegedly hit and killed a pedestrian by East 26th Street and University Avenue panicked and fled the scene when the accident happened, said Des Moines Police Sgt. Jason Halifax.

"She was remorseful," Halifax said.

Brown was identified by a witness, and she turned herself in after investigators called her family.

"She just panicked and made the wrong decision," Halifax said.

The investigation will continue today as police examine surveillance videos from businesses near the accident scene.
