A mother assaulted a Des Moines man after she saw him throw a Pop-Tart and wrapper into a car at her toddler, police said.

The man said he didn't realize the person in the car was a child and only threw a wrapper through a window after seeing someone toss it outside.

No arrests have been reported.

The incident occurred outside Casey's, 3725 Beaver Ave., around 8:25 p.m. Tuesday, according to Des Moines police reports.

A woman told officers she was pumping gas and noticed her two-year-old throw a Pop-Tart and the wrapper out the window of her vehicle, authorities said.

Surveillance video showed the item didn't come near the man, who was also pumping gas, but showed him walk over and fling the object back into the car, police reports show. Officers could see pieces of Pop-Tart in the child's hair.

The child's mother assaulted the man and punched him in the eye, police said. Several witnesses heard her yelling about her child, officials said.

The woman didn't want to press any charges. The man, who was the first to call police after the assault, had not decided if he wanted to press charges.
