Google, MidAmerican sign renewable energy agreement

Iowa's wind energy will fully power the first phase of Google's Council Bluffs data center, adding another Iowa data center that is receiving power from renewable energy.

Under an agreement with Google, MidAmerican Energy will provide up to 407 megawatts of wind-sourced energy to the Mountain View, Calif.-based technology company's Council Bluffs data center.

The two companies said Tuesday that the energy provided will fully power the first phase of that data center.

Google is currently constructing the data center on 1,000 acres of land it owns in western Iowa.

The tech company first brought plans for the Council Bluffs data center in 2007, initially investing $300 million. At full build out, Google is expected to invest about $1.5 billion in the data center.

Late last year, Facebook said its data center under construction in Altoona would rely 100 percent on renewable energy.
