A southern Iowa chiropractor has agreed to surrender his state license after being accused of accepting sex as payment for his services and of performing exorcisms on patients as part of their treatment.

Charles Manuel of Lamoni also urged some patients to stop taking medications that they’d been prescribed, according to the Iowa Board of Chiropractic.

In an agreement signed last month, Manuel surrendered his Iowa license. He agreed not to apply for reinstatement for at least 10 years. Before he could resume practicing chiropractic in Iowa, he would have to prove that “the basis for revocation of his license no longer exists, and that it is in the public interest for the license to be reinstated,” the documents say.

A woman who answered the phone at his home said she had no comment. A woman who answered the phone at his former practice said he hadn’t worked there in “quite a while.”
