Metro roads still partially covered with snow
Des Moines crews finished plowing their routes and some residential streets by 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, but an extra inch of snow that fell afterward meant plows were out again on those same roads, said Jonathan Gano, city public works director.
Plows are still clearing residential streets in the city's 30 plowing districts after more than 5 inches fell in Des Moines on Monday, Gano said. Though snow routes are now open for parking, residential parking restrictions are still in effect.
As of 11 a.m. nearly all main roadways in the metro are clear of ice and snow, according to travel maps from the Iowa Department of Transportation.
MAP: Des Moines snow removal status
Temperatures in Des Moines should hover around 24 degrees with winds from the northwest at seven to nine miles per hour, said Rod Donovan, meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
Readings from the Des Moines International Airport show the city received 5.4 inches of snow Monday, Donovan said.
Any further flakes will likely be concentrated along the northern border, near Estherville. But the metro area shouldn’t expect any further snow, rain or ice on Tuesday.
By Tuesday's evening commute, almost all streets, including residential, should be cleared, said Jonathan Gano, Des Moines public works director.
