On the trail with the 2016 candidates

The Iowa Poll, a Register exclusive since 1943, is a widely watched measure of voter opinion in the nation’s leadoff caucus state. In earlier years, it became a tradition for political strategists to stake out locations near the Register’s printing site to see the first papers off the presses.

In recent years, journalists around the world have monitored smartphones, tablets and laptops at release time to quickly relay the results to their audiences.

The Iowa Poll is often referred to as the “gold standard” of polling because of its reputation for accuracy.

Selzer credits the poll's accuracy to avoiding speculation and adhering to scientific methods. She emphasizes that poll results represent a snapshot in time; they’re not predictions.

Her West Des Moines-based polling firm, Selzer & Co. Inc., has conducted The Des Moines Register's Iowa Poll since 1997. Before that, Selzer was on the Register's staff as the paper's in-house pollster from 1987 to 1992.
