15-year-old charged in teen's shooting

A 15-year-old male has been charged in connection to a shooting that occurred on East 14th Street on Thursday afternoon.

The victim, also 15-year-old male, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest at about 1:30 p.m. He was taken to the hospital by a citizen, according to a news release from the Des Moines Police Department.

It was first reported that after being shot, the victim approached a house on the 1300 block of East 14th Street, looking for help. It was later determined by investigators that the shooting occurred inside the house. An initial police report also indicated a suspect in the shooting was at-large; however, detectives brought the suspect into custody after conducting witness interviews.

According to the release, the 15-year-old taken into custody in the shooting has been referred to juvenile courts on the charge of reckless use of a firearm.

The victim remains hospitalized and is expected to survive, the releases states. Police Sgt. Paul Parizek said motive and intent of the shooting is undetermined at this time.
