A 23-month-old baby fell from a third-story apartment window Monday afternoon and survived.

Police, the fire department and an ambulance arrived in the 6300 block of Southwest 9th Street around 1:30 p.m. on reports of a baby that had fallen from a window. The family was inside the unit and the children were watching television when the 23-month-old seemingly popped-out the screen window and fell, said Sgt. Mark Miller of Des Moines Police.

Sod and woodchips line the ground underneath the windows of the complex. The child was well enough that it could crawl along the ground afterward, police said.

It could be heard crying from within the ambulance on scene and was taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

It's unclear whether the parents will face any charges, Miller said. The Iowa Department of Human Services is typically informed and may investigate child-involved incidents like this.
