Iowa State Fair: What will 2015's thematic butter sculpture be?
Nothing is more Iowan than the butter cow.
Later this week the Iowa State Fair and butter sculptor Sarah Pratt plan to announce this year's new thematic butter sculpture.
For the uninitiated, there's always a classic butter cow at the fair. But each year there's also an accompanying glop of carved dairy in the Ag Building display case to pay tribute to Iowans' whims and cultural fads. Everybody from Shawn Johnson to Kevin Costner – plus a controversial, aborted attempt to honor Michael Jackson – has been immortalized in butter.
We polled Register readers on Facebook about what thematic butter figure they'd like to see Pratt carve this year.
Here are a few of their responses and some of our ideas, too:
John Wayne, in honor of the opening of the John Wayne Birthplace & Museum in Winterset
Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II, painter of the Freedom Rock located along Highway 25
Fred Hoiberg, ISU-turned-Chicago Bulls basketball coach
Caitlyn Jenner, alumna of Graceland College in Lamoni
Dan Wardell, Host of the IPTV Kids Club
Seth Rollins, WWE Heavyweight Champion from Davenport
Slipknot, nine-member masked Iowa metal band currently on tour
Chris Soules, Iowa farmer and the famed "Bachelor" who recently broke off his engagement
Hayden Fry, longtime University of Iowa football coach
Bill Riley, "Mr. State Fair" who emceed variety shows at the fair for generations
Carrie Underwood, country music star who will perform on the fair's Grandstand Aug. 17
Which of these famous Iowa figures from recent headlines would you most want to see sculpted this year?
