Police: Phone scam targets ISU students

Multiple Iowa State students have received scam phone calls demanding money, the Ames Police Department warns.

The fraudulent callers threaten to take a student’s diploma, issue an arrest warrant or cause problems with a visa, according to a post to the Ames Police Facebook page.

Police say the callers are aggressive and have been masking their phone numbers, posing as police departments, through caller ID.

Anyone who believes they’ve been a victim of these calls should contact the Federal Trade Commission via their website.

Any on-campus residents who have given money to the callers should report to ISU Police at 515-294-4428.

Any off-campus residents should report to the Ames Police Department at 515-239-5133.

One scammer received a call from the following number, 518-650-2026, which is a dead line that, according to callERcenter.com, is a number associated with scams.
