A Missouri man was beaten and robbed near the Iowa State Capitol around 11:30 p.m. on Friday night after leaving the 80/35 music festival, according to a Des Moines police report.

The Lee’s Summit, Mo. resident told police he was in Des Moines for work and went to the festival on Friday night. He met “a couple of girls” at one of the concerts who claimed to know about an after-party they all should attend.

After leaving the festival, the girls met up with a group of three men, according to the report. The girls left the group, but the Missouri resident kept walking with the men. The men attacked him around the intersection of East Grand Avenue and East Ninth Street, hitting his head on the sidewalk several times.

“(He) stated he thought the males were trying to kill him,” the report said.

The attackers took approximately $1,000 from the man’s pockets, as well as his phone. A police officer interviewed him at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, noting that he seemed to have severe pain in his ribs and couldn’t stand up straight.

The man couldn’t identify his attackers, but told the officer they called one of the men “Sam.”
