Iowa State defensive lineman Devlyn Cousin has been "suspended indefinitely" from the team after being arrested and charged with simple domestic assault.

"We are aware of the charges filed against Devlyn, and we take them very seriously," football coach Paul Rhoads said in a statement Saturday. "The allegations brought against Devlyn are not consistent with the expectations of our program.

"Devlyn is currently suspended indefinitely under the Iowa State student-athlete discipline policy as we gather more information."

Cousin, a 6-foot-2, 290-pound sophomore from St. Marys, Ga., was arrested at 11:10 p.m. Friday on charges of domestic assault and obstruction of emergency communication.

Geoff Huff of the Ames Police Department said Cousin was charged with pushing to the ground a woman identified in the arrest report as his girlfriend while she called 911 at 8:50 p.m. Friday. According to the report, the two were arguing in a residence at 4130 Harris St. in Ames.

Huff said the 911 operator heard a woman crying and a man yelling in the background before the phone connection suddenly went dead. The woman was not able to speak directly to the operator, Huff said.

Officers got the address by tracking the 911 call.

Officers interviewed both Cousin and the unnamed woman. They arrested Cousin when it was determined that she was pushed to the ground.

Cousin played in nine game, totaling 12 tackles. He started the first two games.
