State boys: I.C. Regina, Treynor reach 2-A title game

Nathan Stenger of Regina drives to the basket in the semifinal Class 2-A state tournament matchup with Pella Christian Thursday, March 12, 2015.

In a quarterfinal upset of Western Christian, it was an early offensive outburst that lifted Pella Christian.

On Thursday, Iowa City Regina kept the Eagle offense grounded.

Regina held Pella Christian to 27 percent shooting, on its way to a 55-33 win in the Class 2-A semifinals.

"That just wasn't the team that I saw most of the year and I give Regina a lot of credit," Pella Christian coach Larry Hessing said. "I thought their defense was tremendous."

Drew Cook had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds and Nathan Stenger added 13 points as Regina (22-4) returns to the state title game for the first time since winning the Class 1-A crown in 1979.

"It's something that we have thought about ever since we were little kids," Stenger said. "This is why we work hard every day and what we've wanted every practice and now that it's come true it is amazing."

Regina will face eighth-ranked Treynor (23-3) in the 2-A title game at 8:06 p.m. on Friday.

All five starters scored in double figures as Treynor (23-3) shot 54 percent from the floor.

Trey Robinson had 16 points and 13 rebounds as Jacob Flathers added 12 points and 13 rebounds as Treynor overcame a four-point third-quarter deficit.

"That's the type of team we want to be," Treynor coach Scott Rucker said of the balance. "That's the way that we want to play."
